Riot is our wonderful case of the month. This eight month old chihuahua weighs in at 5.4 lbs, and was bred to dominate on the agility course. He presented to our hospital with an abnormal occlusion, meaning that his teeth do not line up correctly in his mouth. The shape of his jaw was causing his mandibular canine teeth to hit the roof of his mouth. In order to prevent oral pain as he continues to grow we extracted other small teeth to give the large teeth room to grow. He recovered well and is pain free! It is interesting to note that his dental x-rays look very different than an adult dogs teeth would. They black pulp chamber is much wider in young teeth, making them more fragile. Remember that dog teeth do not fully mature until around two years of age, so treat them with care.
